Top 20 Artists/Bands Of The Decade prt. 5
The White Stripes
Discovered: Yet another introduction from a friend, who turned me on to so much new music that at one point I had a whole shelf on my bookcase filled with all the CDRs I'd burnt of everything she lent me.
Recorded output this decade - 4 albums, 20 singles, 1 EP, 1 live album
Fav album - Elephant (2003)
Fav song - 'Black Math' from Elephant
Antony & The Johnsons
Discovered: I first heard Antony sing 'Perfect Day' on the Lou Reed album The Raven. I forget whether I decided to start looking him up after that or when I saw the tour for that record and Antony sang a show stopping version of 'Candy Says'. Either way, what drew me to his music, just like Patty Griffin, is his haunting, transcendent voice. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but I find it luminous.
Recorded output this decade - 3 albums, 6 EPs, 2 singles, 1 live album (with Current 93)
Fav album - The Crying Light (2009)
Fav song - 'Her Eyes Are Underneath The Ground' from The Crying Light
Pig Destroyer
Discovered: A friend at a record label I worked at was playing one of their albums. Within the first 10-15 seconds I pretty much became an instant fan. Guttural vocals? Check. Fast? Check. 10 to 15 guitar riffs per song AND each tune is less than 2 minutes in length? Check and check. OK I'm in!
Recorded output this decade - 3 albums, 2 splits, 1 EP, numerous comps
Fav album - Terrifyer (2004)
Fav song - 'Naked Trees' from Prowler in the Yard (2001)
